FIRST COMMISSIONS-University of Melbourne

To launch the University of Melbourne’s new faculty of Fine Arts and Music we gave students their first commission. What they didn’t know was they were working to the same briefs responsible for the creation of some of the world’s greatest pieces. The five students working to the David commission were then flown to Florence to reveal their work alongside the historic piece.

Briefs Included: Michelangelo’s David/Frida Kahlo’s Self-Portrait with Monkeys/Bob Dylan’s Hurricane/The Great Petition by Susan Hewitt and Penelope Lee/Camille Claudel’s/ Age of Maturity/The Titanic

First Commissions is an exhibition that demonstrates the power of artistic minds and the enduring role that art plays in reflecting the intellectual, moral and cultural climate of our time. The project features 30 of our most exciting emerging artists. Each has responded to themes which have inspired some of the world's most iconic works.

 

Discover how five students, unknowingly tackled the same commission that led to the creation of Michelangelo’s David and were then invited to exhibit their work alongside the historic piece itself.
